Am I being materialistic here? I genuinely need to know if I have the right to be hurt. PLEASE help?

So my boyfriend and I just completed a year. For our anniv I got my boyfriend an expensive Ralph Lauren mens perfume, I wrote him a two page letter, I cut out an LOVE and coloured in it and stuck it on pink handmade paper rolled it up and put a ribbon around it and I put these things in a shimmery black paper bag with a huge paper red and gold heart in the middle which I bought too. He didn't give me anything when we met but while reading the letter he teared up and confided that he bought chart paper and a lot of stuff and wanted to start working on it but didnt get the time because he has to study for these really important exams which are next week. However on the other hand I also know (even though I shouldn't be but one of my friends accidently spilled it out to me) that he is giving me some surprise at my birthday party which is on the 3rd. My friends are involved in that plan tool So I thought maybe he's spending a lot of money for that and my birthday gift. Should I let it go? He doesnt know I feel a little hurt btw. Honest answers please...
