Does horror movies inspire metal song writing.?

Cause like slayer they deal with subject matter like homicide and suicide and also violence, would they still write the way they do if there was no horror influence or would they get there influence trough the span of time with stuff like the Spanish inquisition or people like jack the ripper and vlad the impaler, just want to no what everyone thinks what inspires these great musicians like slayer, iron maiden, metallica and so on and so on.
