In Final Fantasy XIII, why does Barthandelus attack us when...?

The so-called "tools" are starting to realize what is happening and how they are acting so they decide to take it out on the one who started it. He attacks them because they revolted against him and try to kill him to stop his evil plans. Yeah it is kinda confusing.
