What is the role of the numerous spaces (in the spongy layer) in the functioning of the leaf?
The air spaces in the spongy mesophyll of a leaf are in communication with the air via the open stomata and they provide a pathway for gas exchange and diffusion with the moist lining of the spongy mesophyll cell surfaces
